HOW TO REDUCE FRIZZ IN YOUR HAIR

March 5, 2021

It’s common to have frizzy hair when you’re living in one of the tropical countries in Southeast Asia. In fact, the dry and wet weather all year round makes it difficult to have soft, silky hair.

Even if you use anti-frizz products, nothing seems to work. At Kimage, we know the struggle of needing to tame your frizzy hair when you have to attend an important interview or meet potential clients. Almost everyone has experienced such a moment throughout their lifetime.

If you find yourself looking for ways to reduce frizz in your hair more often than you think, your first step is to understand what’s causing the frizz so that you can take proper actions. Before that, it’s important to understand what is considered as frizzy hair.

WHAT IS FRIZZY HAIR?

Frizzy hair refers to the strands of hair that stick out from the rest of your hair. It can be the shorter or longer, dryer strands of hair that just won’t stay put. If you often inspect the strands of your hair, you may notice a few strands that tend to stand up or curl and have a different texture from the rest of your hair.

WHAT CAUSES FRIZZY HAIR?

While the main culprit of any frizzy hair points to the environment, it can also be attributed to a number of bad habits like towel-drying your hair or over-touching your hair. Let’s understand the causes in more detail.

HUMIDITY

One of the common causes of frizzy hair is humidity. When your hair is dry, the cuticle opens up to absorb the surrounding moisture in the air. This causes your hair to swell and frizz.

Additionally, science explains that hair frizz is due to the presence of high levels of hydrogen in the air when it’s humid. As our hair is highly sensitive to the presence of hydrogen, it’s no surprise that it can change the shape of your hair strands.

DRY AND DAMAGED HAIR

Another cause of hair frizz is dryness. When your hair becomes too dry, it longs for moisture just like how we long for water when we’re thirsty. Once your dry hair is exposed to moisture, it tends to frizz faster than usual.

So when you go outside when it’s humid, your hair will want to absorb all the moisture in the air. Not only that, but too much heat can also cause your hair to be frizzy. Too much heat will dry out your hair, thus damaging your strands and frizzes your hair.

Luckily, there are ways for you to tame frizzy hair as the hairstylists at Kimage are trained to give you the most suitable advice to treat your frizzy hair. Ahead, we’re sharing some ways for you to control the frizz at home.

WAYS TO REDUCE THE FRIZZ IN YOUR HAIR

  • Use a hair shampoo that’s free from sulphate

Sulphates are strong detergents that are often added to shampoos. It’s also been known to remove grime and dead skin cells from your skin and scalp. However, it can strip the natural oils from your scalp and hair, making your hair dry and brittle over time.

To avoid adding the frizz to your hair, you might want to start examining the ingredients of your hair shampoo and replace them with a sulphate-free shampoo. Look for hair shampoo that’s packed with glycerin as it hydrates your hair from the inside out.

  • Always use a hair conditioner

There’s a reason why your hairdresser often uses a conditioner after washing your hair. That’s because it can help to keep your hair cuticle hydrated so moisture can penetrate deep into each strand.

This will prevent your hair cuticle from opening up and absorbing excess moisture from the environment. Make sure you apply the conditioner from the mid-lengths down to the ends of your hair.

  • Use styling tools on low heat

While it may seem like hot tools can tame frizz and unruly hair, the opposite may happen when you use them in high settings. Any heat setting that feels uncomfortable on your hair may swell up the cuticle, causing more harm than intended.

Instead, use your styling tools on low heat to prevent damaging your hair to create a slick, frizz-free hairdo.

  • Trade your cotton towel for a microfibre

Your hair is the most fragile when it’s wet, so it’s important to use the right fabric to dry your hair.

Cotton towels may have better water absorption but it can cause friction when you towel-dry your hair. It can damage your hair and cause frizziness. You can instead opt for a softer fabric like an old t-shirt or a microfibre towel.
