Hair Perm for Short Hair: The Best Perm Hairstyles to Try

An image of layered hairstyles by Kimage Salon hairdressers

Summary:

  • For fine, flat short hair, a root perm or cushion perm adds lift at the scalp without visible curls, and a root perm typically holds for up to three months.
  • A C curl perm bends the ends of a bob inward for a soft, face-framing shape and lasts around 4 to 6 months, while an S curl gives looser, low-maintenance waves.
  • A cold perm uses no heat and gives tighter, more defined curls, while a digital perm gives softer, glossier waves and suits previously rebonded hair.
  • Kimage offers cold, digital and airwave perms, cushion perm and its salon-exclusive fringe stitching, and a hot or trend perm with a cut starts from $145 with a junior stylist.

Short hair and perms have a reputation problem. Most people picture tight curls sitting on top of the head, and that's usually what happens when a perm ignores the cut underneath it. Planned properly, a hair perm on short hair gives you lift at the roots, movement at the ends and a shape that still looks done when you wake up.

If you're unsure which type of perm suits you, this post walks through the best hair perm styles for short hair, the way we'd explain them at the chair. We also offer a free consultation before every hair appointment.

Root perm or cushion perm: For short hair that falls flat

Woman with shoulder-length dark hair, soft bangs and lifted volume at the roots after a root perm by Joanne at Kimage Salon Singapore

If your hair is fine and lies flat by lunchtime, you probably don't want curls at all. You want height. A root perm works only on the section closest to the scalp, so the crown lifts while the lengths stay straight. It usually holds for up to three months.

A cushion perm does a similar job, perming at the root for volume without any curl. It's a good first perm if you're nervous. Nobody will look at you and think "perm". They'll just see hair that looks thicker.

Ask for a root or cushion perm under our perm services.

C curl bob: Soft, polished and subtle

Back view of a sleek, chin-length black bob with ends curved inwards in a C-curl, styled by Jefernie at Kimage Salon Singapore

A C curl bends the ends of your hair inward. On a chin- or jaw-length bob, it frames the face and gives the ends that rounded, just-blow-dried look without the blow-dry. People notice the shape, not the curl, which is why it's such a requested Korean style.

Expect it to last around 4 to 6 months, with trims every 4 to 5 weeks. On a bob, ask for light trims that tidy the outline without cutting off the curled ends. We've answered more C curl perm questions here, plus tips on how to maintain a C curl.

Not sure your hair's long enough for the style you want? Book an appointment and your stylist will check your length and hair condition at the consultation, before any solution goes on.

S curl waves: For cuts that graze the shoulders

S curl gives soft, diffused waves rather than a defined ring of curl. On a lob, it adds movement and breaks up the blunt, straight line short hair tends to fall into.

We'd pair it with a light styling milk such as Lucicare Styling Milk 3 (Soft Curls). Ask for S curl by name under our perm services.

Cold perm or digital perm on short hair?

The curl shape is one decision. The method is another, and it changes how your perm hair looks and feels.

A cold perm uses no heat and gives tighter, more uniform curls with a matte finish, so it suits cropped cuts that need real definition. A digital perm uses heated rods for looser, glossier waves, and works well on naturally straight or previously rebonded hair. Airwave perm uses air currents to build volume and waves, and it's the gentlest of the three on your hair.

Our digital perm vs cold perm guide goes deeper, and your stylist will recommend a method at your consultation.

Short perms for men: Fringe stitching and textured tops

Kimage's salon-exclusive fringe stitching perms the fringe so it stays in place without visible gaps. For texture, a perm on top of a two-block cut adds movement while the sides stay neat.

See more in our guide to hair perms for men, then book fringe stitching through our perm services.

Keeping a short perm looking fresh

Wait 24 hours before you wash. After that, use a shampoo and conditioner made for permed hair, plus a heat protectant before hot tools. Book a trim every 4 to 5 weeks.

Short hair gets cut more often, so permed ends are trimmed away sooner than on long hair. Good aftercare keeps the curl bouncy rather than frizzy in between. You may browse styling products for curls in our
e-shop.

FAQ

Can you perm very short hair?
Yes, as long as there's enough length to wrap around a rod. On very cropped cuts, a root perm is often the better fit.

How long does a perm last on short hair?
With proper care, up to 8 months. It varies by style: a root perm holds for up to three months and a C curl for around 4 to 6 months.

Will a perm make my short hair look puffy?
Not if the cut and curl size are planned together. Looser curls or a root-only perm add shape without bulk.

Can I perm bleached hair?
We don't recommend perming previously bleached hair, because it tends to turn frizzy.

How much does a hair perm cost at Kimage?

A hot or trend perm (S curls, C curls or loose waves) with a haircut costs $145 to $215 with a junior stylist, or $235 to $325 with a senior or master stylist, including treatment. A perm with rebonding and a cut costs $217 to $323 with a junior stylist, or $353 to $488 with a senior or master stylist, including treatment. A men's wave perm with a cut is $95 to $125 with a junior stylist, or $145 to $175 with a senior or master stylist. These rates cover hair up to mid-back length, and a surcharge applies to waist-length hair.
