If you're looking into hair colouring in Singapore, you've probably got two questions. How much will it cost, and will my hair need bleach? This guide answers both, using the prices on our current rate cards.

Hair colouring services at Kimage

• Single shade. One permanent colour from root to tip, no bleach. The usual choice for going from black to a soft brown.
• Root retouch. Colours about 1 inch of regrowth. Most people need one every six to eight weeks.
• Highlights and balayage. Highlights are placed in sections for clear contrast. Balayage is hand-painted onto the surface, so it blends softly and grows out without a hard line.
• Pre-lightening and bleach. For shades lighter than your hair can reach on its own. Extra rounds of bleach are priced as add-ons.
• Creative colour. Pinks, purples and blues, with two rounds of bleach included. These semi-permanent shades fade in about 2 to 4 weeks.
• Colour refresh. Brightens faded colour and brings back shine, but won't change new root growth.

Three things move your hair colouring cost. Stylist level is the first: Senior stylist prices include a haircut, while Leading, Master and Principal prices don’t. Bleach is the second: any shade that needs bleaching is treated as a technical colour, so it’s priced as balayage plus the bleach rounds, whatever shade you’re going for. Length is the third: rates cover hair to mid-back (bra level), root retouch covers hair to underarm level, and longer hair carries a surcharge.

Junior stylists colour selected shades only, so for ash or bleached shades, DM us a photo on Instagram first. Full rates are on our Senior stylist and Junior stylist pages.

Do you need bleach? How we decide during consultation

Dark Asian hair holds a lot of warm pigment. Ash, grey, blonde and pastel can't show until that pigment is lifted, which is what bleach does. Medium to dark browns like chocolate or chestnut can often go on without it.

Your history matters too. Colour can't lift colour, so if you've dyed your hair dark before, you may need bleach even for a brown.

Before anything is mixed, your stylist does a consultation and scalp analysis, checking your natural level, any old colour in the lengths and how your ends feel. When bleach is needed, we condition the hair before colouring and treat it afterwards.

Humidity, sun and daily washing all speed up fading. Use a shampoo made for coloured hair, rinse with cool water and apply a heat protectant before hot tools. A weekly hair mask helps too, especially after bleach.
