HOW TO PREVENT HAIR COLOUR FROM FADING

July 29, 2020

After hours of staying put, waiting for your Kimage hairstylist to apply the hair dye, you’re finally a changed person! While it’s a thrilling experience to get your hair dyed, you’d want your new hair colour to last as long as possible to get your money’s worth.

Imagine spending a portion of your monthly salary on getting your hair coloured professionally, only for it to last for a short period of time. You’ll be upset when that happens. Besides, you don’t get to dye your hair often as the chemicals in the hair dye will damage your hair.

Some Singaporeans prefer to get their hair coloured to suit a certain occasion or important event that involves socialising like Chinese New Year or weddings. When you socialise with a group of people, the first thing that you’ll notice is their appearance which also works as a conversation starter.

Take Chinese New Year as an example. The colour red is very significant with the festival, allowing most but not all Chinese to dye their hair in different shades of red. However, the red hair dye is known for not sticking around for long due to its molecular size. At most, it’ll last for about 6 weeks before fading faster than you had expected.

Fun fact: The molecular size of red hair dye is larger than other hair colour, which explains the hair’s inability to absorb the colour.

Other than the short-lived red hair dye, there are hundreds of colour to choose from. So, depending on your choice of hair colour and type of treatment, the effect and duration varies. Besides, in order to ensure that your hair absorbs the hair dye, your hairstylist will need to apply the dye several times depending on your hair condition.

COLOURING STYLES AVAILABLE AT KIMAGE

As most Singaporeans have dark-coloured hair, unless you’re of mixed descent, i.e. Eurasian, your choice of hair dye is likely limited to a range of colours. Fortunately, you need not worry about having limited selection of hair colour as we will help you achieve the desired result. Ahead, we’re sharing a few colouring trends which are popular among our customers.

Balayage – The fancy French term meaning ‘to paint’, is a colouring technique involving freehand painting on the hair’s surface. It’s also one of the highlighting techniques that’ll give your hair a natural-looking colour when it’s reflected by the sun. This colouring style doesn’t require much upkeep and can last up to four months.

Highlights – A colouring technique to give your hair some colour contrast and make your hair glow. It’ll typically lasts for up to eight weeks.

Grey colour – A colouring trend which was made popular in Singapore from 2 years ago. As bleaching is required to remove the red pigments in your hair, it’ll require a bit of upkeep to maintain the smoky look.

Blonde and silvers – A colouring method which involves total removal of red pigments in the hair. You’ll have to undergo extensive bleaching which is highly damaging for your hair. In order to maintain your desired hair colour, you’ll have to put more effort into caring for it daily.

WAYS TO MAINTAIN HAIR DYE

Regardless of your hair colour, you’ll want to maintain it for as long as possible. The following are some tips to maintain your hair dye.

Use colour-enhancing conditioner – As with your normal hair care routine, using colour-enhancing conditioner will keep your coloured hair looking fresh until the roots grow out. Do check with your hairstylist to understand which colour conditioner is suitable.

Avoid showering with hot water – Although getting a hot shower is ideal on some days, you may want to avoid washing your coloured hair with hot water. Not only will it dry out the hair, it’ll also strip the colour off the cuticle.

Minimise use of hair styling tools – The heat from styling tools will damage your coloured hair over time. Should you need to use them, apply thermal protectant like hair oil to protect your hair from the heat.

Moisturise your coloured hair – Some colouring techniques can damage your hair due to the chemical used. So, it’s crucial to moisturise your hair with a suitable hair conditioning product. Weekly hair treatment at home will also help to upkeep your hair’s moisture.

Use chlorine-free hair products – Chlorine has a bleaching effect which will strip your desired hair colour. Before you buy a shampoo or conditioner, check for the ingredients first.

Prepare your hair – Before changing your hair colour, you may want to get your hair treated so that it’ll easily absorb the new colour.
